Armenta, Alonso de. Notarial document in Spanish manuscript concerning several public loans to the Spanish King Philip IV (King 1621 - 1665) by Don Alonso de Armenta y Casaus from Sevilla. Madrid, 6th December 1627. Original Spanish document handwritten on vellum leaves, with several signatures. 8, 2 blank lvs. Folio. Sewn. (# 3884)

The public loans were necessary (according to the text) to finance hospitals, schools, but also wars. In return for these Juro's, the donor got yearly a life-annuity. Enormous amounts of money are mentioned, e.g. 150 million ducats. Also the public loans given to the Crown by several forefathers of Armenta are mentioned. - Waterstain to last 2 blank leaves.

Deals with the advantages of grain and cattle, not only for the population but also for the wealth of the State. Dedicated to the Société Economique de Berne, who awarded three times a prize to Bertrand. Jean Bertrand (1708 - 1777) was a Swiss agriculturist, the author of several books, and pastor at Orbe in Switzerland. - With library stamp on fly-leaf of the "Fürstlich-Starhember'sche Familien Bibliothek Schloss Eferding". Nice copy.

Contains also chapters on economy, trade, law, agriculture, the cultivation of rice, producing of silk and wool, arts, religion, and a lot of political history. Carlo Denina (1731 - 1813) was an Italian historian from Piemont. At the end of the last 3 volumes are lists of subscribers. - Library stamp on every title-page from the German collector Graf Waldbott von Bassenheim.

First edition of this manual on agriculture, dealing with the improving of farmlands, fields for crops and grasslands. Proposing the reducing of the amount of fertilizer and limiting the amount of fallow land. Contains advices to the government, also about the better use of the labor force. Deals with all aspects of agriculture, as they are applicable for France and other countries. The author is very critical about the new methods recently published by the Englishman Jehtro Thull, and those of Duhamel du Monceau and Patullo, as these are not based on the local practice. - Occasionally browned. A nice large-paper copy.

Rare edict concerning taxes (Steuern), also necessary because of threat of a war against the Turcs, issued by Maximilian II Emanuel (1662 - 1726), Elector (Kurfürst) of Bavaria and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire. He was also the last Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and Duke of Luxembourg. - 4 holes and tears causing loss of some text. Lightly foxed. At the bottom is pasted a piece of paper containing the original/official blind-stamped seal.
