Thiébaud 898. Harting, Bibl. Accipitraria No. 284. Souhart 461-462: "Assez belle édition". Finely executed first and best Italian edition of J.A. De Thou's famous poem on falconry 'Hieracosophioy, sive de re accipitraria' (first published in Bordeaux 1582) and P. Angelio's hunting poem 'De aucupio' (first published in Florence 1566). The present edition with the text in Latin and Italian verses contains the delicate and attractive engravings by the Venetian artist Giuseppe Filosi. Wood 603: "This rather scarce treatise is divided into three distinct sections. The first is ... dealing with falconry in general; the second part ... describes a method of catching birds by means of birdlime (still widely used in Italy) and, third, leisure-hours studies by G.P. Bergantini". Appended to the poem of De Thou are some notes by the translator showing the division of all hawks used by falconers into two classes, followed by a bibliographical note and the Latin-Italian version of a hunting poem by D.M. Ausonius (c. A.D 395). - Slight marginal waterstain at the beginning; small piece of inner blank margin neatly repaired; good copy. |
