info

Collaborator of the Olivetan Master. Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. (Italy, Lombardy, c. 1440). Charming historiated miniature on vellum, showing Joseph and Mary at the moment of handover of the infant Jesus to Simeon, in front of an altar. 9,2 x 8,9 cm. (# 5889)

EUR 8500,-

This fine initial S in vibrant colors, cut from an illuminated manuscript, was painted "by a Lombard artist who collaborated with the Olivetan Master, but is not him and who was active in Lombardy in the decades on either side of 1450" (kind information of Sandra Hindman). This Collaborator of the Olivetan Master (active c. 1431-1449), worked together with the Olivetan Master, an Olivetan monk, who is now identified as Girolamo da Milano. The Olivetan Order, a branch of the Benedictines, has a particular reverence for the Virgin Mary. On verso Gothic script. Sister leaves are present in notable public collections. - This high quality miniature is preserved in a 20th century hall-marked handcrafted golden frame of 14-carat gold (13 x 13 cm), which is adorned with turquoise gemstones.
