Russian tetraptych. Brass travelling icon, a quadratych altar of four panels with blue enamel. Russia, region of Moskow, c. 1810. Each of the four panels is divided into four discrete scenes, surmounted by an ogee-arch crest (kokoshnik), depicting the twelve most important Russian Orthodox religious feast-days and the four most important Mother of God Icons. On the outside the Cross with the instruments of the Passion. Above each scene Russian inscriptions, in Cyrillic script, are identifying the scenes. Medium-sized icon, 15,4 x 35,4 cm. (# 5893) |
